Abstract

Although it is still early days of the post-COVID phase in Japan, online international education, which was rapidly introduced during the peak of the health crisis since many international education practice activities were restricted, is now being revisited for its purpose and significance.

In this session, we would like to consider Blended Mobility, which effectively combines global learning methods utilizing digital technologies and ICTs ( such as COIL/VE) with mobility programs such as study abroad and training abroad as the international education 2.0.model.

In Europe, the adaptation of this concept has begun in 2018. Blended Mobility is now also suggested in the Erasmus Plus initiative for 2021-2027. When Blended Mobility becomes a widely available option on campus, students themselves can proactively design their own learning pathway of global learning. The concept of Blended Mobility will invite a more diverse student population to experience international education during their college life by custom-designing their own journey.

In this session, we will cover various digitally enhanced modalities for online international education such as (1) COIL/Virtual Exchange, (2) Virtual Mobility, and (3) JV-Campus. These are important pieces to design a Blended Mobility program. The session will then touch on the concept of Blended Learning, which leverages the integration of online and onsite learning. Finally, the session will include a mini-workshop activity in which participants will plan a mobility (study abroad) program based on the premise of Blended Mobility, imagining the actual student population of their affiliated institution. This session requires active input from the participants.
