Abstract 概要

A general overview of the cultural, educational, and life benefits students gain from international study will be examined by Paterson. Then an analysis of the particular attractions and benefits for international students studying in Japan could bring will also be covered. Finally, this opening section will examine how relevant these benefits are for students in the current and post COVID-19 world, and if they are being delivered efficiently. Next, the recent trajectory of numbers of Japanese students undertaking international study will be examined by Kubo (an undergraduate student studying online at the University of Sydney due to COVID-19) to see how this has changed during COVID-19. She will also look at how choosing a foreign or Japanese university can make a difference in students’ academic experience, cross-cultural understanding, and educational performance. Finally, the undergraduate experience of Japanese students in foreign universities and Japanese universities during the COVID-19 pandemic will be compared along with the difficulties and issues for foreign students applying to and studying at Japanese universities. Next Kim (an undergraduate student taking f2f classes at Yonsei University), will examine the Japanese style of education from foreign students’ perspectives to highlight some cultural impediments international students consider when committing to study in Japan. Finally, the session will showcase the undergraduate experience of foreign students in South Korea - a country culturally and economically akin to Japan - to pinpoint the major educational differences that ultimately set Korean universities apart from their Japanese counterparts. At the end, we will have time for a discussion / q and a session.
