Session 13

Global Dialogue: Alternative Education Abroad post COVID-19

定員 Capacity: 定員なし No Limit

Abstract 概要:
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for us to continue to endorse student physical mobility. Currently, online classes already form the main component of academic work at most schools around the world. Now, international educators may consider virtual mobility, virtual exchange and hybrid models as effective alternatives for education abroad programs. Based on examinations of actual experiences and good practices worldwide, this session explores how new virtual programs have been effectively implemented.
The speakers will introduce examples of alternative programs such as 1) online cross-registration programs; 2) online joint classrooms or COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning); 3) hybrid programs (Online and "Face to Face"); and 4) online international conferences (online Model United Nations or other international student conferences online). While these alternative programs will not be a complete replacement for physical study abroad, they may attract a new target population, for example, students who previously were unable to attend a traditional study abroad due to physical or financial challenges. The key factor of successful alternative programs is how to maintain a high quality of learning outcomes. A program needs to be created with low risk and low cost as possible. Multilateral virtual exchange online can be an effective platform, if we are able to develop virtual consortia or university networks. This session also discusses how we can create effective teams for developing alternative programs.
